When creating packaging for fragile goods, sometimes a protective box isn’t enough. Adding custom inserts can help create additional padding to ensure safe transit. Foam has often been the most popular choice to add protection, however it isn’t very eco-friendly. So what do you do if you need to package fragile items while staying eco-friendly? Here are our recommendations!
Paper Inserts
Made from our flexible paperboard, our custom paper inserts can help keep items separate from each other. These inserts are perfect for keeping your products in place without excess bulk. These inserts are extremely modular, so you can get your perfect fit!
Honeycomb Paper
As an alternative to bubble wrap, we can use paper honeycomb wrap instead! But why hexagons? When we see honeycombs in nature, the structures that they create distribute force more evenly between the cells. The honeycombs, when placed together support each other, creating a strong, shock-resistant structure. Taking that knowledge from nature and applying it to packaging is ideal for creating packaging for fragile goods.

Similar to bubble wrap, honeycomb paper comes in a roll that you can cut to size based on your product. This paper comes perforated as a solid sheet, and the honeycomb structure is revealed when you stretch out the paper to wrap around your products.
Corrugated Inserts
Corrugated boxes are one of our most protective packaging structures. It’s no surprise that that protection also extends to inserts made of corrugated cardboard too! We put this protection to the test by performing a drop test of a ceramic mug from Grumpy Kid Studios! Those inserts are formed from flat sheets of cardboard that suspend the items within the box. They also feature flaps that hold the items snugly in the die-cut holes.
One of the draws of the conventional foam insert is the fact that the foam forms perfectly around items. This is also achievable using corrugated inserts! In a previous blog post, we went over the way cardboard is made. Most corrugated boxes are made from a single-layered material with a smooth top and bottom liner. To use corrugated materials in a similar way to foam, we can use multiple layers of corrugation with a die-cut hole in the shape of the item to be packaged.

Whether your fragile items are in for a long journey or a short car ride from your store to your customers’ homes, contact us to see how going custom can help add some extra protection that’s tailored directly towards your business’ unique product needs.
