There are many ways to use NFCs in our every day lives. But have you ever wondered how to use NFCs in packaging? As technology advances, we’re beginning to incorporate it into every facet of our lives.
In this week’s post, we’re showing you how to use NFCs in packaging. Read on to learn more!
What Is An NFC?
Short for Near Field Communication, NFCs are proximity-based wireless communication tools. The technology is an evolution from radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, which you’ve likely seen before (think hotel/office key cards or credit card tap).
Both these technologies are short-range and involve a reader and a tag to work properly. The reader device generates a magnetic field by passing electricity through a coil. When the tag with its own coil comes into range, the magnetic field causes an electric current within the tag.

The tag has storage for some data, which transfers to the reader once the initial “handshake” is complete. This entire transfer happens without wires and even contact!
The key difference between RFID and NFC is the distance they are usable at. NFC technology requires the tag and reader to be within a few centimetres, whereas RFID can operate over longer distances. NFC technology is faster and bidirectional, meaning NFC tags can be both readers and tags at the same time!
Ways to Use NFCs In Packaging
NFCs are great tools to incorporate into packaging. Next, we’ll look at some creative uses of NFCs in packaging.
To Activate An AR Experience
Using augmented reality (AR) to create unique end user experiences can be a powerful marketing tool. These immersive experiences can range from interactive games, promotional material, and even product information! Check out our blog post on ways to use AR for more ideas on how to incorporate NFCs into your packaging.
Access To Content
NFCs can also provide access to special additional content. This is common in the gaming industry to access downloadable content (DLC). Take Nintendo for example! In several games, the Nintendo Switch console uses NFC technology to allow players to add limited-edition content to their game.
Business Cards
Business cards that incorporate NFC technology can be a great tool to share your business or business information to clients or potential clients! These cards can come in the form of a tag, sticker, cards, keychains, badges and more!
When making NFC business cards, they can come in a range of materials too from stainless steel, classic plastic, to 24K gold. Some NFC business card services can even gather analytics about your website!

Authentication
Luxury items often come with a certificate of authentication to provide customers. These are usually a paper card with the item’s authentication credentials written on it. Using NFC technology built in to certain luxury items can help make sure that the certificate of authenticity never gets lost.
